The Homophobia Debate

In the recent past, the debate has been raging whether same gender relation is are part of the African societal norms or it is a Western culture. Whichever side of the debate one stands, there is need to agree that this is now the elephant in the room and it is eating the fabric of our society very steadily whether we like it or not. The hindsight of this debate is pegged on my view that there is a likelihood that when we are cornered with real issues, we like running under the pretense of Western Culture but is it true that we have a true African Culture at this stage that has not been tainted or compromised by Western values? (A debate for another day).

If the aspect of same gender intimate relations scares you stiff them I put it to you that you are homophobic. Homophobia is the fear of homosexuals. Many a times groups have viciously attacked members of the society that have been deemed to be in same sex relations i.e gay or lesbian.

My argumentation is, same gender relations has been fronted as a human right issue a position  I beg to differ with these reasons; It not a matter of Human Right issue but rather a sexual orientation issue that has nothing to do with rights. There is no way we can accord lengthy debates even up-to our parliaments over a matter that has got to do with desires of an individual. I do not declare it a Human Rights issue if I intend to lay 15 women in one hour or I want to marry 80 wives like Akuku Danger.

Infact, Akuku just opted to get his wives out of adult consent between them and did not have to take to the streets of Kisumu or Homabay town to demand for his rights to marry many wives and thus I would love to think the same should prevail in circumstance where one wants to be engaged in the action. In my lack of knowledge if I may ask, what joy does a man get by rupturing the rectum of a fellow man?

If the Homosexuals have to demand for their rights to engage in the practice then I believe Prostitutes, Thieve and or petty offenders should also take to the streets to demand for their rights to engage in the practice for ain't it also their own personal feelings just like the homos? When faced with this then what must a society do?

We must develop a "Don't Ask Don't Tell" policy where the sexual orientation of an individual is not under scrutiny but the said individuals should also not take to the streets on my City to tell me of their existence. Let them just live amongst us without highlighting where their sexual preferences lie. As we have known, they can do it without shouting at the top of their voices that they are gay. Come on; its simple, I don't have to know what you prefer between the sheets!

  1. This issue simply refuses to go away. Leviticus 20:13 says, 'If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; they shall surely be put to death; their blood is upon them.' You would think that this would be enough to get people off it, but noooooo! They want to shout it from the roof tops. Since we can't go around killing every gay person (read: male homosexuals) because it would make us no better than Hitler, I propose the same thing you have; if any man likes doing the nasty with his fellow men, they should do so in private, silently and hopefully far, far away from the rest of us folks who consider this habit vile. The fact that their sexual orientation is a bit skewed does not make it a human rights issue. A mental issue, maybe, but not a human rights one!

  2. I absolutely agree with you Robert. Coz i have wondered why they take to the streets demanding for their rights yet I also have a right to detest their behaviour. Well put bro...it can never be a human rights issue!

  3. first of all, you say western culture, who or what compromises "western culture".? i would like you to point me to one thing that that so called 'culture' forced down any African throat.
second, i beg to differ with you on the point that by taking to the streets, the queers are forcing the 'straight guys' to agree with them. Take a minute and picture yourself in their shoes, in Uganda. Should their 'problem' be genuinely genetic- meaning that they have no way but to be gay- they are forced to stay closeted and in hiding from ruthless people and government laws. My point here being that going to the streets, like any other demonstration is to try and show that victimizing a person for a 'choice' they have made is wrong! human rights or not, killing people for any reason, not withstanding the fact that they abhor you, is wrong! no man has been put on this earth- Robert to judge a fellow man-. God happily reserves that role. The old testament had most provisions 'revised' and 'toned down' after the coming of Jesus Christ, that for any 'sinner' to be redeemed, the go to their Father through His Son. Not through any humans hands.
And by the way, if people judged less, i believe, queers would gladly take it to the bedroom. Sadomasochists do!
